5 Podcasts you should be listening to

The popularity of podcasts now means that there are hundreds of thousands of podcasts to pick from. With that amount of choice, it can be hard to find something good to listen to. To help you, I’ve picked five of my favourites:

Drunk Women Solving Crime
The title alone should make you want to listen to this podcast. If you’re still not convinced, here’s what you need to know: Each week, 3 writer/comedian hosts (Hannah George, Catie Wilkins and Taylor Glenn, left) invite a top celeb guest to drink a lot of alcohol with them whilst they try to piece together a sometimes grisly, always strange but true crime. Every episode is laughing-so-much-on-public-transport-that-people-think-i’m-crazy hilarious. The episode with Jenny Eclair is a particular favourite of mine (and not just because I was in the audience!).

Dead Pilots Society
Another choice that will leave you crying with laughter. On Dead Pilots Society, they give table reads to American comedy TV pilots that were never picked up, each in front of a live audience. The interviews with the writers are particularly interesting on where the idea came from and there it all went wrong, but the best part is all the amazing celebrity guests they get on to read the characters including Danny Pudi, Ian Gomez, Janina Gavankar and Mamie Gummer. The worst part is when you realise these hilarious scripts will never be made into a full series.

Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum
On Inside of You, actor Michael Rosenbaum (a.k.a Lex Luthor from CW’s Smallville) chats to a different person ‘in the business’ each episode. This has included Dominic Monaghan, Macaulay Culkin, Felicia Day, Jennifer Morrison, Kumail Nanjiani, Stephen Merchant, Henry Winkler and so many more. Being in the business himself means he’s able to get the big names talking for an hour and thanks to his relaxed and friendly interviewing technique, he ends up having some interesting and open conversations about fame, relationships and life. He’s able to get things out of his guests that some TV chat show hosts couldn’t.

Wonder Women
The newest podcast on list with only two episodes published, but I’m a big fan already. Good friends and musical theatre stars Celinde Schoenmaker and Carrie Hope Fletcher sit down (based on their profile picture, I’m assuming with a glass of wine in hand) and have a conversation about being a women and all that entails. The first two episodes were about hysteria and female friendships and it’s the hosts’ honest and real friendship that makes this podcast so funny and engaging. It’s like getting to eavesdrop on two best friends and wishing you could join the conversation.

Getting Curious with Jonathan Van Ness
I’m a big Queer Eye and Jonathan Van Ness fan (Can you believe?) and his podcast is a must listen. Each week, he interviews an expert in a different field. From politics, to psychology to sport and the environment, each episode helps you be a little bit more informed on the topic without being overwhelmed with information. (He’s also interviewed his fellow Queer Eye members and his own mother). What really shines through in every episode though is JVN’s intelligence and passion for knowledge as he asks just the right questions.

Special mention: The West Wing Weekly
You’ll probably only enjoy The West Wing Weekly podcast if you’re a fan of The West Wing as each episode discusses an individual episode, hence not including it on the list. But it’s funny and informative and a must listen if you have watched the show (especially if you’ve watched the show as many times as I have).
